I'm a mess, and so is my room. I like it better that way. I laugh too much for my own good and I always say the wrong thing at the wrong time. I'm loud, and I don't actually hate the people that I say I do. I can't keep a steady relationship to save my life, because I'm not 'girlfriend material.' there are some things that i'll never understand. i'll never understand the goosebumps i get when first stepping into hot water. i'll never understand the dreams i have with strangers in them, people i've never met or seen. i'll never understand how a person can keep going back to the ones who hurt them. but what i do understand is that once we do understand everything, the world loses its shine. curiosity killed the cat, but the cat had nine lives.
i imagined the lies the valedictorian was telling them right now. about the ‘exciting future that lies ahead’. i wish she’d tell them the truth: ‘half of you have gone as far in life as you’re ever going to. look around. it’s all downhill from here. the rest of us will go a bit further, a steady job, a trip to hawaii, or a move to phoenix, but out of fifteen hundred, how many will do anything truly worthwhile, write a play, paint a painting that will hang in a gallery, find a cure for herpes? two of us, maybe one. the rest of us will make compromises, find excuses, someone or something to blame, and hold that over our heart like a pendant on a chain.

whatever you do in life will be insignificant but it is very important that you do it because... you can’t ever really know the meaning of your life... and you don’t need to... just know that your life has a meaning... every life has a meaning... whether it lasts one hundred years or one hundred seconds... every life... and every death changes the world in its own way... ghandi knew this. he knew his life would mean something to someone, somewhere, somehow. and he knew with as much certainty that he could never know that meaning... he understood that enjoying life should be of much greater concern than understanding it. and so do i.

of life and lived, or he who has stayed securely on shore and merely existed?
so fail. be bad at things. be embarrassed. be afraid. be vulnerable. to out on a limb or two or twelve, and you will fall and it'll hurt, but the harder you fall, the farther you will rise. the louder you fall, the clearer your future becomes. failure is a gift, welcome it. there are people who spend their whole lives wondering how they became the people they became, how certain chances pass them by, why they didn't take the roads less traveled. those people aren't you. you have front row seats to your own transformation, and in transforming yourself, you might even transform the world. and it will be electric, and i promise it will be terrifying. embrace that. embrace the new person you're becoming. this is your moment.

so i guess we are who we are for a lot of reasons. and maybe we'll never know most of them. but even if we don't have the power to choose where we come from, we can still choose where we go from there. we can still do things. and we can try to feel okay about them.

That is all we ever do anymore is settle. We settle so much we don't even realize that we are settling anymore. That is what scares me, instead of changing for the better...we just settle for the worse. We settle for the worse because everyone just presumes it is going to happen anyway.
